Ilona & Clay – Backyard Aspen Wedding – Colorado Wedding Photographer
Clay & Ilona’s wedding was one for the books in 2018. Not only was it chock full of family traditions, but it also withstood some pretty gnarly storms. The wedding took place at Clay’s childhood home in Basalt, Colorado near Aspen. It was so fun to get little history lessons from Clay as we went around the ranch. For example, he made the red bird house when he was a kid that you’ll see in their portraits later in this post. There were also many Russian traditions on Ilona’s side (like the desserts!) which was so interesting to experience and learn. To top it off, Ilona planned everything to be sure it was picture perfect because she loves photography. This is definitely what intimate wedding photographer‘s dreams are made of. And can you believe her sister made her bouquet?!
After the first look, a storm started creeping in. We had ridden the gondola up Aspen mountain for that, incorporating Ilona’s love of skiing. So we had to rush down before they shut it down. Once we were back at the ranch, it poured for what seemed like forever! I kept talking with Ilona and Kira, the planner, to decide how to proceed. Determined, we decided to not give up on the open air wedding Ilona desired. I personally love when my couples embrace the rain, and I love shooting in it. It truly makes for some gorgeous photos. When we finally decided to proceed with the ceremony, the rain slowly stopped and we were able to enjoy the farm table dinner as well!
